3D Robotics

3DR is the result of collaboration between Chris Anderson and Jordi Munoz. Initially serving drone DIYers, it quickly outgrew the community. By 2012, the organization had created a world-class universal flight code that was the basis for Pixhawk, the leading open autopilot platform. The research institutes and UAV companies around the world that utilize this platform are changing the approach to particular human endeavors, from agriculture and construction to search and rescue. The drone company went mainstream in 2014 and launched Site Scan in 2016.   

Site Scan

Developed as a commercial drone platform, Site Scan is an integrated system that makes aerial data collection safer and faster for site inspections. This fully automated system takes the data from the camera and moves it to an application and the cloud for a complete drone to data platform.

The robust Solo app is pre-installed on a Sony Xperia tablet that is included in the purchase. Familiar hand motions such as swipes and pinches can create, direct and execute the flight plan. No specialized training or drone flight experience is needed. Site Scan incorporates three core components: data collection, data processing and secure cloud integration.

Data Collection

Flight and image capture is fully automated for data collection. Choose from three capture modes from the dashboard.

  • Scan. Select the object or structure to be modeled and the flight automatically sets up and takes the high-resolution photos needed. The app then stitches them together for a 3D model. Send them for processing and analysis with the flick of a fingertip.

  • Survey. Use your finger to draw the outline of the survey area on the tablet’s map and select the preferred resolution. Software creates the flight path, then automatically directs the drone, from take-off to landing. Geotagging and orthorectification create a planimetrically correct image for high-resolution maps and DEMs.

  • Inspect. Examine and photograph vertical structures that have federal mandates for ongoing sight inspections. Site scan saves the expense of manned aircraft and keeps inspectors on the ground. Direct the drone by using the same swipe and pinch fingertip motions employed with smartphones. Watch the high-definition video feed and send the drone where it’s needed to get hi-res images utilizing the pilot-system.

Data Processing and Cloud Integration

Upload the data to the secure 3DR cloud. The ReCap processing platform integrates with Autodesk’s suite of products, including but not limited to AutoCAD, Civil3D and Infraworks. Cloud integration ensures data is formatted and ready for integration with Autodesk products and is accessible to stakeholders, team members and clients.

Target Industries

  • Construction - Administrative side. Track and manage projects with real-time actionable data that helps minimize cost and enables smarter decisions. Designed for project managers and superintendents to communicate easily with clients using daily or weekly drone imagery for detailed progress updates. It provides subcontractors with better oversight for accurate reviews and sign-offs.

  • Construction - QA/QC. Field engineers and inspectors can spend hours or days walking large project sites and documenting areas of interest. Drones provide the capability of daily scans in context. These 2D or 3D scans allow flagging of issues that require groundtruth inspection. Pre-pour scans offer documentation of pre-existing conditions such as plumbing and electrical conduit positioning. Detailed plans can be overlaid atop current images for planned vs. actual placement, preventing misplaced cans. If drilling is necessary after concrete is poured, the documentation gives the exact location of rebar and post-tension cabling. This allows subcontractors to work around them, saving time and money.

  • Insurance. Add geolocation and timestamps to images, ensuring each photo is linked to a field service ticket. Pair with the Sony zoom lens for high-resolution images, even in low light conditions. Field inspectors can get up close to the damage without leaving the ground, reducing the chance for injury and improving the rapidity of underwriting or loss prevention assessments and claim inspection reports.

  • Survey/Mapping. Plan, scan and execute surveys in minutes instead of hours or days. Different flight modes allow you to capture the site, topographically, from any angle. Drones can automatically take hundreds of pictures in a specific area quickly. The software identifies similar points across multiple images to build a 3D point cloud, which can then generate data that engineers use for design and build work.

  • Utilities/Infrastructure. Use the tablet-based app to plan and execute missions, keeping field personnel on the ground while inspecting tall structures. Equipment and infrastructure conditions can be examined an assessed quickly, even in hard to reach areas. Images are geotagged and uploaded to the secure cloud platform for sharing and managing jobs.

  • Earthworks. Drones allow cut and fill analyses to be conducted and processed in hours, instead of days. Accurately measure estimate haul costs to win bids and keep projects running smoothly. The ability to frequently re-fly missions enables cost-effective data collection for current surface models.

Compatible Drones

The 3DR Site Scan drone uses the Sony UMC-R10C camera and an SPC-C Exmor CMOS sensor that is 13 times larger than sensors on non-commercial drones. E-Mount photogrammetric, 3X optical zoom lenses and custom gimbal. Under 2kg.

The DJI Phantom 4 Pro Drone uses a 20.1MP camera on a 3-axis gimbal, a 1-inch Exmor CMOS sensor and a low distortion lens. Employs five-direction obstacle sensing and avoidance. Up to a 30-minute flight time. Under 2kg.

5 Autonomous flight modes

Select the desired plan, and the drone will take care of the rest.

  • Area survey. Create up to date, highly detailed, accurate to scale maps of a defined area. (Orthomosaic mapping)

  • Crosshatch Survey. Select the target area and capture aerial photos that are at an approximately 45-degree angle from the ground, from four directions. This enables views of the tops and sides of objects (oblique imagery).  

  • Perimeter Scans. Take vertical and oblique imagery of structures and exteriors. This allows for the creation of meshes and detailed 3D point clouds. Capture the surface of any upright or diagonal structure with one touch. CAD deliverables can be available in days.

  • Re-fly Existing Plans. Monitor changes and get consistent progress reports by flying the same route, numerous times.

  • Inspect Mode. Take the controls and make manual flights. The 3X zoom and image stabilization capabilities on the R10C lets you take detailed, geotagged photos.

Integrates with Autodesk BIM 360

The partnership with Autodesk enables Site Scan integration with the top management tool for virtual field teams and construction managers. Drone data is accessible to entire project teams, from superintendents and engineers to subcontractors and managers. It also offers three new capabilities for Site Scan users.

  • Design file overlays. Import CAD and pdf BIM 360 files into Site Scan, superimpose them onto the most recent orthomosaics and compare the initial designs with up-to-date real-world images. This allows errors to be found and corrected, reducing costly revisions.

  • Shared Data.  Point clouds, digital elevation models and orthomosaics can be added to the BIM360 account, making them accessible to project tools such as Revit, BIM 360 Glue and Field, etc.

  • Error Correction. The solution enables issue correction directly on the orthomosaic when job site problems are identified. Push data directly to the onsite team members via BIM 360 field for easy collaboration and quick resolution.

Training and Support

Whitepapers and an online knowledgebase provide information about best practices and example scenarios for workflows and setup. Descriptions and instructions for use of tools employed during the flight and post-flight are available. The support team is manned with engineers who are familiar with all aspects of the drone and software to assist clients 12 hours a day.
